The Challenge

An 18-megawatt expansion at a Bay Area data center campus was stuck waiting on the grid. The local utility needed at least two years just to study the upgrade, before it could even start building it, leaving the company's growth on someone else's clock.

The Solution

Generate Capital financed, and now owns, on-site fuel cell systems, with micro-grid functionality that got the expansion moving without waiting on the utility. Bloom Energy engineered the technology; Generate put up the capital and took on the risk of operating it under a 20-year agreement.

Operational Excellence

The customer's job is running data centers, not fuel cells, so Generate keeps that risk on its own books. Since 2019, Generate has financed and operated Bloom Energy systems for data center, commercial, and institutional customers, and this one is no exception: it runs at greater than 99.99 percent availability, with savings that keep compounding once the utility's own upgrades eventually land.
