The Challenge

HCPS manages nearly 280 schools and administrative sites, many of which had outdated energy infrastructure that needed significant upgrades to meet the new sustainability mandates. The District faced several challenges: a large physical footprint, a lack of personnel to implement the multi-measure energy efficiency plan, and insufficient capital to execute upgrades at scale. To successfully meet its energy savings and maintenance cost reduction goals with minimal upfront capital, HCPS needed an experienced partner with the ability to finance, install, and maintain efficiency upgrades.

The Solution

Generate leveraged its infrastructure-as-a-service model to implement energy efficiency solutions at scale, while simultaneously improving teaching and learning environments. Generate's custom, no-capital outlay plan included retrofitting building envelopes, installing efficient LED lighting, introducing smart building controls, and modernizing HVAC systems.

Operational Excellence

This comprehensive, long-term plan not only enhanced students’ learning environments and the school district’s facilities and operations, but also resulted in substantial operational cost savings. The successful partnership with HCPS led to the creation of the Viridis Initiative, a joint venture between Generate and McKinstry that delivers efficiency-as-a-service solutions to cities, schools, and businesses.
